New Braunfels is going crazy with Mardi Gras activities right now. McNamara's (the Newest Farmer's Market in Gruene) just had a parade. TinTop Burgers has a new "Mardi Craw" burger (patty, crawfish, lettuce, tomato, and cajun remoulade). 2Tarts has some sparkly Mardi Gras cookies.
Willie's Grill has started having Mardis Gras "Beer, Bugs, and Blues" nights.
Uwe's Bakery has some beaaauuutiful king cakes.
PopBelly's Popcorn has some new colorful Mardi Gras popcorn. Calahan's is doing beers and mud bugs on the patio on the 3rd and The River House has a spectacular new Mardi Gras dish. This town has gone all out!
Krauses has currently taken on the most this year though (in my opinion), doing six days of multiple events to celebrate Karneval (the German version of Mardi Gras) with some "Ooomph!" and a lot of "Oom Pah pah."
We made a little video of our night out at Krauses! Take a break, kick up your feet, and follow us through one night of their festivities, enjoying ALL the good German eats, drinks, music, dance, a keg tapping, and a crazy fun competition.
The good news is the competition isn't done! If you have especially strong arms and a liking for good German beer, the men and women's winners from each round will compete in a finals at Krauses on August 17th. Then the victor wins a trip to New York City to compete to be the National Bier Stein Holding champion. AAAaand then, if you win there, you get a free trip to Germany!! Prost!
Krauses Cafe is a local New Braunfels restaurant serving up classic German fair with a Texan flair.
The remaining Karneval events this year are:
Monday, 3/4 - Pups and Pints Happy Hour - 3-6 pm
Tuesday, 3/5 - Honky Tonk Saints - 6-9 pm
The first annual New Braunfels Scheren will be held March 9th, from 3 to 6 pm. People will shave their heads to raise money for St. Baldrick's. Come join the fun and raise money for a good cause!
Texas State Opera Theater is putting on a benefit concert at Krauses on March 16th from 7 to 9 pm. There will be German food, beer, and an opera by Mozart that they made to be Star Wars themed. STAR WARS opera AND beer! This is not an event to be missed.
